A delightful illustrated introduction to the greatest achievements of the ancient world and published in cooperation with the British Museum, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is a fascinating look at the ancient technological marvels that continue to captivate children and adults today. Each chapter focuses on a specific monument and contains a short history of the civilization that built it; how the monument was likely used; a description of its structure; how it has inspired great structures of our own age (e.g., I. M. Pei's Louvre pyramid); how the building was likely engineered; and its known or theorized fate. Artifacts and tools, period drawings and paintings, contemporary plans, and photographs of archaeologists at work round out this remarkable look at the most splendid and ambitious accomplishments from the greatest civilizations of the ancient world, which include: · Pyramids at Giza in Egypt · Statue of Zeus at Olympia in Greece · Hanging Gardens of Babylon in Babylonia/Mesopotamia · of Artemis at Ephesus in Greece · Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in Persia · Colossus of Rhodes in Greece · Lighthouse at Alexandria (Greece/Egypt)

From School Library Journal Grade 4-6-An excellent introduction, beginning with an explanation of how the list came to be. The book features four information-packed pages on each entry: the Pyramids at Giza, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and the Colossus of Rhodes. Only the Pyramids at Giza still stand, but the book is filled with watercolors of the wonders, photographs of artifacts relating to the sites, maps, and diagrams showing how the various structures may have been built. The text makes liberal use of quotes from contemporary sources, illustrating how historians have learned what we know about the ancient world. An appropriate sense of awe pervades the clear, straightforward prose. The book's true strength, however, is in its ability to contextualize the ancient wonders for today's children; each entry includes a section comparing the work to its modern counterparts (for instance, the Colossus of Rhodes to the Statue of Liberty).
